OnSSI-Powered Surveillance System Prevents Vandalism and Theft in School Complex, Leads to Arresting Robbery Suspect

Redlands, CA, Police credit recently-installed system for successful identification of vandals and juvenile burglars

SUFFERN, NY - JUNE 1, 2006 – Redlands, CA Police and school officials are crediting a new, OnSSI-powered video surveillance system for solving a recent break-in at the student store at Redlands High School and for deterring acts of vandalism.

Just one month after the system was installed, two minors were held suspect in the break-in and theft of candy and other merchandise from the student store. School district officials were able to identify the juveniles from surveillance video obtained from some of the 18 high-resolution IQinVision cameras recently installed on the high school campus.

The video shows the students made three attempts to smash a window at the student store over the weekend before they were ultimately able to gain entry on Monday night. The students took the merchandise and hid it in the nearby bushes. Another 16-year-old student was later cited for misappropriation of found property after he found the merchandise and began distributing it to other students.

The IP Video Surveillance system installed at the Redlands high- school complex provides efficient remote access to live and recorded video received from the 18 high-resolution cameras positioned around the campus. OnSSI's NetDVR Network Video Recorder (NVR) and Camera Management System was chosen as the system's underlying software thanks to its extensive camera support, reliability and powerful investigation tools. Taking further advantage of the high resolution cameras used, OnSSI's NetSwitcher Virtual Video Matrix Switch was employed, enabling digital PTZ (pan, tilt and zoom) capabilities into recorded images.

"In the few months since the Redlands High School's IP video surveillance system become operational, it has proved itself as an invaluable tool for identifying persons committing acts of vandalism and theft and reducing the probability of future acts," noted David Massaro, District Coordinator for Technology Services at the Redlands Unified School District in Redlands California. "With OnSSI's IP Video technology, access to prerecorded data received from any of the IQinVision megapixel cameras on campus can be done directly from the high school administrator's PC, using OnSSI's full featured client software. The whole process of retrieving events is quick and simple. And what's more, the system worked very well for us right out of the box."

Gadi Piran, President and CTO, OnSSI, added "School districts nationwide are rapidly becoming aware of the great advantages of installing IP-based video surveillance systems, and Redlands has set a great example for system utilization and cooperation with law enforcement agencies. Thanks to motion detection and alert generating capabilities, alongside powerful investigation tools, the associated manpower costs are dramatically reduced - to the point that the prevented vandalism and theft often offset the cost of the system. And this is even before mentioning the students' safety. We are proud to be one of the leaders in school and campus IP video surveillance deployments, and we look forward to a continuing relationship with Redlands Schools".

Phil Gahn, Director of Security Technology at Epsilon Systems (formerly of Critical Infrastructure Solutions which was acquired by Epsilon Systems Solutions, Inc. on May 15, 2006), a San Diego, CA technical services Company which designed and installed the system at the Redlands School complex, said "we are especially pleased that our installation operated so effectively thereby providing an immediate return on investment and serving as a clear deterrent to reduce or prevent future incidences of this type."
