Cost-effective IP Video Surveillance system provides distributed access to video and maximum operational flexibility
NEW YORK, NY - Dec 25, 2005 – The legendary NYC Strand Bookstore, which boasts the slogan "Home of 18 Miles of Books", has chosen OnSSI's NetDVR to run its new state-of-the-art IP Video Surveillance system. The new network-based security system give store managers access to camera images over the Internet from any remote location, and allow them to store video on any computer hard drive within their network, or on a remote location if needed.
The new IP-based system will add 11 network-enabled cameras to the stores existing nine analog cameras, all of which will be viewed, controlled and managed via the NetDVR and the NetGuard video client.
The system is part of a substantial renovation of the store's existing first-floor space at 828 Broadway and its expansion onto the second floor. The renovation will double Strand Book Store's retail space, giving the bookseller room for 18 miles of books, a new elevator, stairwell, children's area and café. While the second floor renovation is nearly complete, renovation of the first floor isn't scheduled for completion until the end of 2005.
Video will be monitored on a 17-inch monitor set up on the second floor and an additional monitor in the manager's office on the third floor. The bookstore owns and operates five out of the 11 floors of the building at 828 Broadway.
The IP video surveillance and security system was installed by NJ-based integrator Nortronics. Maria Gonzalez, vice president of Nortronics, commented, "The retail sector is just beginning to draw on this technology as a way to cut costs, secure inventory and improve in-store marketing. Strand Book Store is ahead of the game."
According to Eddie Sutton, manager of Strand Book Store, the cameras are not going to be used for security alone. "They'll be used for liability, and to improve in-store marketing by enabling us to view customer response to displays and layouts. Eventually, the cameras could be used to record popular in-store events to share with the rest of the world."
Mulli Diamant, VP Sales at OnSSI, noted, "In Strands we found a user eager to incorporate the most innovative network-based video surveillance technologies available. The system installed in the Strands store provides great operational flexibility – video can be delivered to any user's PC, for viewing and playback, as well as simple maintenance and scalability. The very special nature of the Strands store requires a high level of trust between the store and its customers, and the video surveillance system assures that that level of trust is kept".
About Strands
Strand Book Store was named after the famous publishing street in London, and an old literary magazine. It was established in 1927 on the corner of 4th Avenue, on New York's famous Book Row of America. The bookseller quickly became recognized for its legendary selection of great books at remarkable prices. In 1956, it expanded to its current space at 828 Broadway. Today, the bookseller owns that building and operates out of five of the 11 floors. A second Strand Book Store is located on Fulton Street in New York City's financial district.
